Menopause and Mental Health

Venue: Online

Website: www.rcpsych.ac.uk

Event Notes:

This online event is dedicated to exploring the multifaceted nature of the menopause and its impact on mental health. Adopting a holistic approach, it aims to deepen our understanding of the menopause as both a significant psychological milestone, a biological transition, and a time of potential new-onset and relapse in severe mental illness whilst also highlighting the societal shifts that accompany it.
Menopause is a crucial phase for all psychiatrists to understand as it’s a key developmental transition, hormonally and psychologically, which involves complex biopsychosocial changes and can trigger significant mental health challenges. Psychiatrists must be knowledgeable about menopause to better identify and treat related mental health issues, improving outcomes and quality of life for women.
The event will review the current psychiatric understanding of menopause, share lived experiences, and present up-to-date research and evidence. Through comprehensive exploration, the event aspires to foster nuanced conversations about menopause, including debates on its medicalisation and the diverse experiences of those undergoing it.
