MND Workshop: Admitting and Caring for People living with MND in care home settings

By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

• describe what MND is, including its progression, common symptoms, and how it affects mobility, communication, swallowing, and breathing
• carry out a safe and effective admission process for a resident with MND, including gathering essential information, identifying risks, and understanding advance care plans
• recognise and manage key care needs, including:
  • mobility and positioning
  • nutrition and hydration (including swallowing difficulties)
  • communication challenges
  • respiratory support needs
• identify early signs of deterioration or complications, such as aspiration risk, respiratory decline, or sudden changes in function, and know when and how to escalate concerns
  provide person-centred care that respects the individual’s preferences, dignity, independence, and end-of-life wishes
• communicate effectively with residents who may have speech difficulties, using appropriate strategies and tools
• understand the emotional and psychological impact of MND on residents and their families
• work effectively with external professionals and services, such as specialist nurses, speech and language therapists, and palliative care teams
• apply safe care practices in areas such as moving and handling, infection prevention, and safeguarding within the context of MND care
• reflect on real-life scenarios to improve confidence and decision-making in managing complex situations in the care home setting
