THE ESSENCE OF SOCIAL CLIMATE

Event Notes:
It has long been known that social climate, otherwise known as the psychosocial environment or therapeutic
milieu, is central in determining positive outcomes for patients across a range of service lines, including
those cared for in neurorehabilitation services.
This webinar will focus on the concept of social climate and its importance from both a clinical and
operational perspective. A review of the empirical literature will be presented with consideration as to
how providing positive therapeutic environments can influence patient behaviour and outcomes as well
as key organisational factors, such as staff wellbeing and retention.
Assessment strategies, as a means of benchmarking services, will be discussed, with reference to current
and ongoing research conducted by the authors.
Recommendations for key areas of development that can improve therapeutic environments will be made
and reference will be made to a range of concepts that directly relate to social climate, including team
working, restrictive practice, closed culture and Quality Improvement (QI).
