Neurology courses for trainees

Good general knowledge across all aspects of neurology is essential for registrars during their specialty training. Guidelines state that any training courses undertaken should be directly relevant to trainees’ curriculum needs, and preferably local.
To help you find appropriate courses, we have updated this ever-popular ACNR article from 2020. As before, the list is not a comprehensive guide to all courses of interest to UK neurology trainees – here, we focus on course recommendations for 2026, across the UK.
You can find a fully comprehensive, regularly updated list of neurology and neurorehab events in the ACNR online event calendar. They can also be found in this list, compiled by the ABNT committee. If you’d like to review any of these courses for ACNR, please get in touch with Anna@acnr.co.uk

General neurology courses
ABN Annual Meeting and Trainee Day
Annual ABN meetings include a Trainee Day, tailored to meet the needs of neurology trainees. The main meeting offers opportunities for poster/platform presentations, including prizes. I recommend attending one of the poster tours so that you can hear specialists discuss posters in more detail with the presenters. Bursaries are available for trainees who are first authors of an accepted abstract. The ABN is an incredible opportunity to meet neurologists, researchers, scientists and AHPs from the UK and internationally. The banquet dinner is usually a relaxed and enjoyable setting to get to know people.
Leading Edge Neurology for the Practising Clinician
Annual 2-day general neurology course, aimed at trainees and consultants. The topics range from scientific research, to novel therapeutics and genetics as well as clinically relevant practical lectures. It is a excellent way to keep up-to-date with recent evidence for investigations and therapeutics. Last year I found the sessions on “Assessment of White Matter Disease”, “The Retina” and the session on “CAR T therapy” especially interesting, but I enjoyed the range of topics. The MRI quiz is always entertaining and encourages friendly competition.
Oxford Neurology Course
A 2-day annual general neurology course aimed at trainees and consultants. The course has a strong clinical focus, including the “Best of Oxford’s Grand Round Archives” to challenge your clinical skills, and encourages an atmosphere of lively discussion. There is also a lovely dinner (I attended in 2024 and it was on the rooftop of the Ashmoleon museum) and an option to attend a free medical walking tour of Oxford at the end of the course.
Edinburgh Clinical Neurology Course
An annual 2-day general neurology course that has run in Edinburgh for more than 40 years. Very practical and clinically based, with comprehensive coverage of the neurology curriculum. Contains the famous Edinburgh Clino-Pathology Conference, and attracts delegates and speakers from all over the UK.
Subspecialist courses
UK ILEA EEG and Seizure Semiology Course
An annual, 2-day course that provides a fantastic overview of the basics of EEG interpretation and seizure semiology. The course combines lectures covering the basics, with interactive sessions where delegates manipulate and interpret EEGs themselves, putting the principles from the lectures in to practice. Queen Square Annual Movement Disorders Course
This is an excellent and comprehensive course led by movement disorder specialists. The course covers topics ranging from assessment of tremor and ataxia to advanced treatment of Parkinson’s disease and also approach to diagnosing atypical Parkinson’s disease. A very useful overview of cognitive neurology.
United Kingdom Neuro-Ophthalmology Society Annual meeting
Neuro-ophthalmology is a subspecialty many neurology trainees struggle with or find difficult to gain experience in thus the UKNOS annual meeting is an excellent opportunity to gain clinical insights from experienced neuro-ophthalmologists. Registration has closed, contact organisers for the waiting list.
British Peripheral Nerve Society Annual Meeting
Another great subspecialty course covering common and rare neuropathies from investigations to management and recent scientific advances. The case presentations are amazing!
Liverpool Neurological Infectious Diseases Course
An informal 2-day course that runs annually at Liverpool University, combining interesting clinical cases with relevant talks on aspects of neurological infection.
Edinburgh Sleep Medicine
Usually booked at least a year in advance, the University of Edinburgh and Sleep Research Centre run an annual 5-day course covering all aspects of sleep medicine, including respiratory and epileptic disorders, and sleep phenomena, with a focus on the science behind diagnosis and management.
Regional courses
There are four regional meetings across England:
- North of England Neurological Association (NENA) meetings
