UK & ROI ACUTE STROKE SIMULATION COURSE
Event Notes:
The UK & ROI Acute Stroke Simulation Course has been developed to provide standardised multidisciplinary stroke simulation training to healthcare professionals across the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland. It was established in 2023 by a group of healthcare professionals all with an interest in stroke simulation training and a shared vision to improve stroke training and education. It is our hope that over time stroke simulation training will become easily accessible to all healthcare professionals across the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland.
During the course you will enhance your ability to:
- Recognise an acute stroke and perform a thorough clinical assessment
- Identify appropriate imaging modalities to investigate a suspected acute stroke
- Confidently manage acute strokes with the use of cerebral reperfusion therapies (thrombolysis and thrombectomy) including indications, risks, benefits, contraindications and current evidence base
- Correctly identify stroke mimics
- Apply evidence based practice in the management of haemorrhagic strokes
- Manage patients in the immediate phase post reperfusion therapy
- Lead a multidisciplinary team effectively in time critical scenarios
- Communicate clearly and effectively with patients, their next of kin and other healthcare professionals
- Work collaboratively in a flattened hierarchy
Who is the course for?
This course is open to anyone involved in acute stroke care, this includes the assessment of patients appropriate for acute reperfusion therapies. Candidates have the option of being a “team leader” or a “team member.” Team leaders will have the opportunity to lead at least one stroke simulation scenario. Team members will be part of the team that attend the simulated acute stroke call. Everyone will have the opportunity to be involved in a minimum of two simulations.
Suitable candidates may include: IMTs, Medical Registrars, Stroke ANPs, Stroke CNS, ED Nurses, Paramedics, Physiotherapists, Stroke SpRs, Stroke Consultants, Neurology SpRs, Neurology Consultants, ED Consultants, ACCS Trainees. This is not an exhaustive list – the course is open to any healthcare professional who would be expected to apply the skills taught on the course as part of their daily clinical practice.
Am I eligible to attend?:
- All participants must hold a current clinical appointment and professional healthcare qualification
- All candidates must provide evidence that they have completed their NIHSS training prior to being accepted onto the course
