In addition to their clinical duties, neurosurgeons at all levels are expected to engage with various management and leadership roles. Long gone are the days when a surgeon was expected to only engage in clinical and academic duties. Today, the role of a consultant is much more than that, and a good leadership style with emotional intelligence is one of the most important parts of the job. This is particularly relevant for senior trainees who must demonstrate that they are ready to make the transition into consultancy. This course will help trainees and newly appointed consultants understand the various aspects of management and leadership in neurosurgery. It will provide them with strong foundations to start or strengthen their leadership journey.
This is a two day course aimed at neurosurgery trainees of all levels. It is particularly suitable for those approaching the end of their neurosurgical training. New consultants are also encouraged to attend. The programme will focus on the leadership requirements needed to become a consultant, as well as exploring different leadership styles to improve engagement and outcomes. This includes managing teams and colleagues, inspiring people, mentoring and coaching. It will also be helpful to understand the NHS structure and commissioning, gain insight into the various leadership roles available in the NHS (such as Clinical Governance, Education, Networks), and promote a culture of learning, academic and professional critical enquiry. At the end of the course, trainees will also learn about the opportunities to engage in management and leadership for themselves.
The programme will also have a section focusing on what is needed to become a consultant in neurosurgery, including the first-hand experience of one of our newly appointed consultants. This will be particularly useful for senior trainees aiming to make the transition into a more senior role in the near future.
