Event Notes:
This event will focus on late-onset epilepsy, a rapidly growing challenge as epilepsy incidence rises after age 60.
The Epilepsy Research Institute’s Navigator Symposia bring together established and early career researchers to share findings and build collaborations in key areas of epilepsy research. Led by an Epilepsy Research Institute Fellow, each event supports learning, networking and new research partnerships.
Our next symposium focuses on late-onset epilepsy, a growing challenge as epilepsy incidence rises sharply after age 60. With ageing populations, there is an urgent need to better understand causes and risks and improve diagnosis and treatment. The event will highlight research into epilepsy in later life and help shape future initiatives to support this group.
Designed to be particularly beneficial for early career researchers, the programme will include contributions from both established and emerging researchers, with a focus on clinical and pre-clinical research.
The symposium is co-chaired by Dr Francesca Chaloner (Imperial College London), Epilepsy Research Institute Fellow, and Dr Sana Hannan (Lancaster University).
The keynote speaker is Professor Matthias Koepp (University College London), who will present an update on the first anti-epileptogenesis trial in post-stroke epilepsy.
Other confirmed speakers include:
- Professor Ley Sander
- Professor Hedley Emsley
- Dr Alice Lam
- Dr Rob Wykes
- Dr Josie Mayer
Sessions will cover the landscape of late-onset epilepsy, challenges in diagnosis, causes and co-morbidities (including stroke and Alzheimer’s disease), and opportunities for treatment.
