Understanding the mechanisms of the GIBA community building workshop

Venue: Online

Event Notes:

The gut-immunology-brain axis (GIBA) is a complex network of direct and indirect bidirectional communication routes involving multiple biological systems and signalling pathways such as neural, endocrine, metabolic and immune pathways.

The GIBA is an emerging area of research with potential to improve physical, cognitive and mental health across the lifecourse. However, many of the biological mechanisms underpinning the GIBA and how it is modulated by lifestyle and other factors are not well understood.

Aims of the workshop

BBSRC recognises that to advance research and innovation of the GIBA field will require new interdisciplinary partnerships and integrated approaches across biological systems and disciplines, as well the use and development of high-quality methodologies and tools.

The workshop is intended to provide an opportunity to bring together researchers from across disciplines and sectors to:

  • facilitate networking, knowledge exchange and to foster the formation of new interdisciplinary collaborations
  • explore the opportunities, challenges and the research and innovation community needs to advance understanding of the GIBA and inform future activities
